A variant is one demo "flavor" (industry × geography × period, or a specific feature showcase). Registering a pool
instance does
not
provision a physical database — it must already exist, created separately via SqlWorkbench's ClientProvisioning
pipeline; this only records that it's now backing this variant's pool.
